Opening a modal from an <iframe>

I have an which I am sending post content. I want a modal to open on an error, in this case when something is wrong with a file upload. I have an openModal() function in the iframe's parent window, which I tried to call using remote scripting (ie. parent.openModal()). That did not work. So I put openModal() in the iframe page and called it directly. That did not work either. Is it even possible to open a modal from an ???
